What is laparoscopic and robotic surgery?

Laparoscopic and robotic surgery are forms of minimally invasive surgery that Zeid Pelvic Health Center offers. During laparoscopic surgery, Dr. Zeid uses a laparoscope to perform gynecological procedures.  

A laparoscope is a surgical camera that transmits images of your abdominal area to a computer screen. Dr. Zeid inserts the surgical camera into your abdomen through a tiny incision and uses the laparoscope to evaluate your reproductive organs and look for problems or address a known issue. 

If Dr. Zeid finds a problem, or for example, is performing a hysterectomy, he makes additional small incisions for insertion of the surgical tools needed to perform the procedure. In some cases, Dr. Zeid may be able to insert the surgical tools through the same incision made for the laparoscope. 

What are the types of laparoscopic surgery?

Dr. Zeid uses laparoscopic surgery to perform many common gynecological procedures. Common types of laparoscopic surgery include:

• Hysterectomy
• Myomectomy (removal of uterine fibroid)
• Tubal sterilization
• Removal of endometrial growths for treatment of endometriosis
• Chronic pelvic pain evaluation
• Menstrual disorder treatment, such as abnormal uterine bleeding
• Bladder repair

Dr. Zeid also performs diagnostic laparoscopic surgery. He may recommend the procedure to diagnose endometriosis or to look for abnormalities in your reproductive organs that may explain your symptoms. 

What is robotic surgery?

Robotic surgery is a state-of-the-art surgical technique that combines robotic technology with minimally invasive surgical tools. Dr. Zeid uses the da Vinci® surgical system for robotic surgical procedures.

With robotic surgery, Dr. Zeid performs complex procedures with greater precision and less risk. He uses robotic surgery to treat many gynecological problems such as chronic pelvic pain and abnormal bleeding. 

He also uses the advanced surgical tool to perform total hysterectomies.

Laparoscopic and robotic surgery offers many benefits when compared to traditional open surgery. These benefits include:
